Concrete Q & A: Using an Elastic Frame Model for Column Slenderness Calculations
- Resumen:
As a standard practice, our office uses an elastic frame analysis program to determine the design forces for concrete frames. The program documentation indicates the software is capable of second-order analyses, but we’re not sure if the software accounts for magnification between the ends of the elements. ACI 318-08, Section 10.10.2.2,1 states: Second-order effects shall be considered along the length of compression members. It shall be permitted to account for these effects using the moment magnification procedure outlined in 10.10

Self-Leveling Slab Formwork Tables Boost Efficiency
- Resumen:
To meet an accelerated construction schedule for a medical center, an innovative formwork system was used. The system comprises slab tables, supported at the column-slab interface, that automatically compensate for deflections occurring during concrete placement. After the floor concrete has reached sufficient strength to carry self-weight and construction loads, the tables are lowered and manually rolled to outrigger platforms outside the building, allowing simple and fast cycling

Comparison of Three Methods to Measure Formwork Pressure When Using SCC
- Resumen:
Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) currently holds less than a 10% share of the cast-in-place concrete market in Sweden. One of the factors leading to this low level of acceptance is the difficulty of predicting formwork pressures associated with SCC. If the actual formwork pressure can be monitored in real time, concrete contractors will be able to adjust the casting rate to maintain the formwork pressure below a safe threshold. For that purpose, different methods of measuring formwork pressure were compared

Field Validation of SCC Formwork Pressure Prediction Models
- Resumen:
Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) mixtures were tested and wall and column elements were instrumented to determine formwork pressures during placement. The findings confirm that test methods for evaluating the structural build-up of SCC can be used in conjunction with recently developed prediction models to determine the maximum formwork pressure exerted by SCC. An additional model allows prediction of the rate of pressure drop with time

ACI Board Committee Members Thanked
- Resumen:
I cannot thank our ACI committee members enough for their service and assistance during my transition to the ACI Presidency after Dick Stehly’s sudden passing. To the following members who have ended terms on Standing Board Committees as of the ACI Spring 2011 Convention, I appreciate your efforts and dedication
