- Resumen:
We discuss an advanced undergraduate project on spin noise spectroscopy of atomic rubidium vapor. The spin noise is digitized using a consumer sound card and analyzed by a fast Fourier transform. Students gain competence in digital data acquisition and processing, and the idea of analyzing a noise signal is emphasized.

Quantum chaos: An introduction via chains of interacting spins 1/2

- Resumen:
We introduce aspects of quantum chaos by analyzing the eigenvalues and the eigenstates of quantum many-body systems. The properties of quantum systems whose classical counterparts are chaotic differ from those whose classical counterparts are not chaotic. The spectrum of the first exhibits repulsion of the energy levels, which is one of the main signatures of quantum chaos. We show how level repulsion develops in one-dimensional systems of interacting spins 1/2 which are devoid of random elements and involve only two-body interactions. In addition to the statistics of the eigenvalues, we analyze how the structure of the eigenstates may indicate chaos. The programs used to obtain the data are available online.

Surveying students’ understanding of quantum mechanics in one spatial dimension

- Resumen:
We explore the difficulties that advanced undergraduate and graduate students have with non-relativistic quantum mechanics of a single particle in one spatial dimension. To investigate these difficulties we developed a conceptual survey and administered it to more than 200 students at 10 institutions. The issues targeted in the survey include the set of possible wavefunctions, bound and scattering states, quantum measurement, expectation values, the role of the Hamiltonian, and the time-dependence of the wavefunction and expectation values. We find that undergraduate and graduate students have many common difficulties with these concepts and that research-based tutorials and peer-instruction tools can significantly reduce these difficulties. The findings also suggest that graduate quantum mechanics courses may not be effective at helping students to develop a better conceptual understanding of these topics, partly because such courses mainly focus on quantitative assessments.

A low-cost setup for microstructuring experiments using a homemade UV laser

- Resumen:
We present a simple high school and university undergraduate laboratory setup, with which we are able to texture microscopic structures into polymer and dye films using a homemade UV nitrogen laser. We describe both the laser and the microstructuring setup and provide detailed information on the laser and its beam characteristics. Although this is a low-cost setup, we are able to directly write or texture high-quality patterns into thin films, either by manually controlling a positioning stage or by programming a desired sequence for an automated structuring process. We introduce several hands-on experiments for high school and university undergraduate students and present our first results.
