Core Testing Requirements for Seismic Evaluation of Existing Structures
- Autor:
Halil Sezen

Kenneth J. Elwood
- Resumen:
Determining in-place concrete strengths is particularly important for the seismic evaluation of existing buildings. Underestimating the concrete strength in a seismic rehabilitation design by adopting a lower-bound estimate of the in-place concrete strength can undervalue component resistances, potentially triggering inappropriate rehabilitation solutions. The objective of this article is to review assessment requirements and guidelines and identify ways of setting core sampling requirements appropriate for seismic evaluation. Recommendations are based on a review of statistical methods to select sample size for an acceptable error level and assessment of outlier data.

Seven Principles for Sustainable Concrete Pavements
- Autor:
Thomas Van Dam
Peter Taylor
- Resumen:
Concrete pavement sustainability can be accomplished by following the principles listed in the article. Each principle should be applied in terms of its interdependency with, and/or potential competition with, the other principles by using already available practical tools. However, there are still areas in pavement sustainability that need to be addressed or improved, including life-cycle systems to analyze economic, environmental, and social factors, and sustainable pavement rating systems.

The Case of the Coal Tar Epoxy That Fizzled
- Autor:
Ray Tombaugh
- Resumen:
During the construction of a wastewater treatment facility in 2007, the wet wells and other basins were coated with a coal tar epoxy. Within a year and a half after commissioning, the plant operators noticed that the coating was delaminating from the walls of several clarifier wet wells. Yet, inspections of the clarifier basins showed no coating failures. This article presents a field and laboratory investigation of coating deterioration as well as repair recommendation.

Concrete Q & A: Reserve Cylinders for Compressive Strength Testing
- Resumen:
Is there a requirement for a minimum number of reserve cylinders? When we use 6 x 12 in. (150 x 300 mm) test cylinders (6 x 12s), we typically specify only one reserve cylinder, so is it acceptable to use only one reserve cylinder for 4 x 8 in.(100 x 200 mm) test cylinders (4 x 8s)?
