Evolutionary theorizing about humans has a long history, but psychology’s empirical testing of evolutionary hypotheses about underlying psychological mechanisms is barely 10 years old. As with many emerging and scientific utility of a new explanatory concept. This article considers Gould’s challenge to evolutionary psychology to make use of the concepts of spandrels and exaptation and serves as a guide to the core concepts and current controversies in evolutionary psychology
