Facades have come a long way since the Modernist era, rediscovering their roles as bearers of meaning and inaugurating a visual language that forged new connections between function and interpretation. Now complex hybrid buildings are embedding their functional roles into human psyches by evoking memory and meaning ‘to engage the passing public?, according to SPARK and explored here in a series of recent projects.

RESHAPING RETAIL AND MIXED USE
- Resumen:
From recapturing the facade, SPARK moves on to defining the shopping mall, both symbol and symptom of the worst aspects of Asian urbanism. The key here is to challenge dull monofunctionalism and conventions of form (the dumb box) with imaginative, even counterintuitive approaches that take the outward, visible effects of the facade into the experience of the interior, through mix of use, architectural ambience and spatial ingenuit.

NEGOTIATING NEW CITY TERRITORIES
- Resumen:
Cities are more than collections of buildings and SPARK has undertaken studies that explore how buildings, however large, relate to the urban realm. This is a logical extensión of ‘breaking the box?, as it aims to form a network of connections between different activities and so disrupt the banal monotony of generic urban developments. As with all explorations into the unfamiliar, this starts with map and diagrams to assess the terrain.
