Implementing environmental technologies in development situations: The example of ecological toilets
- Resumen:
The adoption of ecological toilets is examined at a household and community level. Novel technologies are shown to require an emphasis on community education. The value of a demonstration model is highlighted. The transfer of novel technologies requires an iterative process. Needed changes imply a need to rework established evaluation techniques.

Artificial intelligences and political organization: An exploration based on the science fiction work of Iain M. Banks
- Autor:
Yannick Rumpala
- Resumen:
The development of artificial intelligences can have profound political implications. Science fiction literature can help to think about these political implications. The work of Iain M. Banks (the Culture cycle) can be used as a hypothesis on the role of smart machines. The civilization described poses challenges to political (especially anarchist) thought. Such a thought experiment helps to think about the computerization of many technical systems.

Organization of the social sphere and typology of the residential setting: How the adoption of the mobile phone affects sociability in rural and urban locations
- Autor:
Leopoldina Fortunati
Sakari Taipale
- Resumen:
Two surveys with representative samples of European populations are compared. The possession of mobile phones is not associated to urban or rural areas. Maybe because the true space of the mobile phone is the human body (the hand) and clothing (i.e. pocket, bag). However the mobile phone is less widespread in the middle cities of 100,000–250,000 inhabitants. Country is a more important predictor for the possession of mobile phones than city size.
