Practical use of prewetted structural lightweight aggregate to provide moisture for the intenal curing of concrete is described. Laboratory research, conducted to determine the optimum amount of lightweight aggregate, as well as field applications, including recent construction of a 250,000 yd3 (190,000 m3) paving project, are described.

Laboratory studies have indicated that glass fibers may deteriorate rapidly in the high pH environment of concrete. Therefore, a number of codes do not permit the use of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) as primary reinforcement in concrete elements.
