Cathodic Protection of Historic Bridges

Resumen:

During the 1920s and 1930s, bridge engineer Conde B. McCullough designed numerous bridges on the Oregon Coast Highway that were masterpieces of art deco architecture. Most of these included his trademark reinforced concrete arch spans. During the 1980s, the Oregon Department of Transportation began investigating cathodic protection technology to protect these historic spans that were suffering from chloride-induced corrosion of the reinforcing steel. Several impressed current cathodic protection systems using various anode materials applied to the surface of the concrete, including arc-sprayed zinc, were investigated. The history and results of the use of cathodic protection on these historic bridges is presented.

Our Aging Infrastructure

Resumen:

The deterioration of many structures, especially those in coastal marine environments and settings that use deicing salts in the winter months, is accelerated by corrosion of the reinforcing steel. Corrosion is compounded by surface cracks in the concrete that provide a direct path for water and salt to reach the reinforcing steel. A new product called ZBARTM is produced by Gerdau Ameristeel and consists of reinforcing steel with a coating of zinc covered by a fusion-bonded epoxy layer. The fusion-bonded epoxy layer protects the zinc and reinforcing steel, while the zinc provides galvanic protection should the epoxy layer become damaged or deteriorate. Two projects that used the product are highlighted.

Curved-Bar Nodes

Resumen:

In reinforced concrete design, there are numerous examples where bent bars at the outside of a frame corner resist closing moments, such as beam-column and wall-slab junctions. The forces in these corners can be modeled using strut-and-tie models. In this article, a new modeling technique where a single node is used to model the curved region of the bar is presented. Specific recommendations for design and detailing using strut-and-tie models with curved-bar nodes in frame corners and dapped-end beams are offered. Complete sample calculations are provided in an attachment to the electronic version of this article.
