New Frontiers of Steel Fiber-Reinforced Concrete
- Autor:
Janis Oslejs
- Resumen:
In pursuit of increased productivity, contractors and engineers in some European countries have constructed slabs reinforced almost entirely with steel fibers. Initially, these applications were limited to slab-on-pile floors where the consequences of failure with respect to life safety were minimal. The excellent results, however, have encouraged the use of steel fiber-reinforced concrete in elevated suspended slabs with traditional reinforcing bars included only along the column lines for structural integrity.

The Hidden Meaning of Water-Cement Ratio
- Autor:
Dale P. Bentz
Pierre-Claude Aitcin
- Resumen:
Concrete mixtures are almost always characterized by their water-cement ratio w/c. Unfortunately, the w/c is an abstract number without any particular meaning and is inversely related to concrete strength: the lower w/c, the greater the concrete compressive strength. As demonstrated in this article, the w/c also has a hidden meaning that helps explain its relationship to compressive strength and makes this relationship easier to understand.

Concrete Houses Alive and Well After More Than 80 Years
- Autor:
M. K. Hurd
- Resumen:
Between 1919 and 1925, Kate Gleason built 75 homes in two East Rochester, NY, subdivisons—Concrest and Marigold Gardens. The homes were constructed with reinforced concrete walls and floors, had wood roofs, and were equipped with built-in garages, bookcases, kitchen cabinets, and other features that were advanced for their day. The homes are notable not only because they were constructed by one of the earliest female concrete contractors and ACI members, but also because they have survived for over 80 years with minimal repair. An update on these landmark homes is provided in this article.
