CRSI Detailing Corner: Concrete Cover at Rustications, Drip Grooves, and Formliners

Resumen:

Concrete cover is defined as the distance between the outermost surface of embedded reinforcement and the closest outer surface of the concrete. For flat or single plane formwork, providing the proper cover is fairly straightforward considering the appropriate tolerances. The issue becomes more complex when considering architectural rustication, reveals, or drip grooves on the concrete surface. Architectural formliners further complicate the issue because of the multiple amplitudes likely present on the form surface. In all cases, the concrete cover to the embedded reinforcing steel must be properly considered on the concrete surface. This article examines these concrete cover issues as they affect some basic structural elements.

Sustainability and the Built Environment

Autor:

Peter Richner

Resumen:

The quality of the built environment is a key factor for a truly sustainable society. Even in ancient times, every society defined itself by means of landmark construction projects. This hasn’t changed much today as we are witnessing ongoing competitions to have the tallest building or the longest bridge in the world. From a social point of view, the quality of life that buildings and infrastructure provide is even more important. The careful design and construction of new buildings can lead to reduced energy demand. The real challenge in creating a sustainable built environment is retrofitting the existing building stock.

Excessive Deflections of Record-Span Prestressed Box Girder

Resumen:

When completed in 1977, the Koror-Babeldaob Bridge in Palau held the world-record span of 241 m (790 ft) for segmentally erected prestressed concrete box girders. Within 18 years, its total deflection, compared with the design camber, reached 1.61 m (5.3 ft.) and the prestress loss was measured as 50%. In 1996, the bridge was retrofitted, but three months later the bridge suddenly collapsed. It wasn’t until 2008 that the technical data necessary for complete analysis were released. This article shows that the existing models for creep and shrinkage prediction grossly underestimate the deflections and prestress loss, although one model, model B3, does so much less than the others and, if calibrated by the 10-year tests of Brooks, matches the observations.

Cylinder Size and Strength Tests

Resumen:

I’m curious as to why ACI 318-08 Section 5.6.2.41 states that at least three test cylinders are required to define a strength test using 4 x 8 in. (100 x 200 mm) cylinders (4 x 8s) but only two test cylinders are required to define a strength test using 6 x 12 in. (150 x 300 mm) cylinders (6 x 12s). I work near Chicago, and we place a lot of concrete and fireproofing when the ambient temperature is between 0 and 20°F (–18 and –6°C). We just started using the smaller cylinders and have been having poor compressive strength results.
